Physiotherapy, or physical therapy, is a Medical health profession that involves the treatment of physical disorders by employing evidence-based clinical kinesiology, fitness, exercise, rehabilitation, mobilization and rehabilitation. Physiotherapy is designed to improve a patient's range of motion and functional mobility by applying certain modalities. Physiotherapists use different modalities in treating their patients; therefore, it is important for the physician to determine which modality best suits the condition of his or her patient. Patients' ability to recover is dependent on the modality used.

Physical therapy modalities are categorized into two: non-specific modalities. Non-specific modalities are commonly referred to as non-surgical modalities. These include: massage, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, light-weighted exercise, heat and vibration, and soft-tissue manipulation. Specific modalities include electrotherapy, laser therapy, deep compression, cold and hot compression, ultrasound guided therapy, manual therapy, neuromuscular therapy, stretching and weight bearing therapy. The second type of modality, called as specific modalities, involves the use of specific procedures.

There are different areas of specialization that allow expert physical therapist to focus on treatment modalities. This includes orthopedic and rehabilitation specialization, geriatric and pediatric specialization, musculoskeletal specialization, neurology and neuropsychology specialization, sports and recreational therapy, neuropsychology, and psychology and behavioral sciences specialization. All these specialization include different areas of clinical training and theoretical study.

It is recommended that the physician first consult with the patient regarding which modality he or she wants to use. The patient's condition and age are two main factors to be considered in determining which modality is suitable for his or her particular case. Patients can choose between manual and electrical therapy. They may also opt between soft-tissue or rigid tissue therapies.

The modality used should be determined based on the patient's preference and ability. Patients are also advised to have at least three treatment sessions. Expert injury care therapists use various modalities to treat patients depending on their condition and ability to recover. Some patients may need one session, while other may need several sessions.

Physical therapists are trained professionals who must be certified and registered with the American Physical Therapy Association. {PAA) to practice physical therapy. They are required to pass certain tests that ensure that they have the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to be a physical therapist. For example, physical therapist exams and refresher programs are conducted every two years. or at least annually to determine the current state of knowledge of the physical therapist. Physical therapists are also expected to adhere to the standards set forth by the National Registry of Examiners for Therapeutic Quality Improvement (NREQ).
